Maz Compton reveals why she’s on the Pegan diet

Wait for it. You are going to flip out when you read this. In fact, this might make you scratch your head, throw your phone across the room or face palm your own face.

Are you ready for it? Okay, a quick disclaimer. This is not my own masterminded idea. I take no responsibility for reporting the facts of this story, I am simply, like anyone, just trying to figure out what to eat so I can lose that bit of stubborn belly fat. So, I have been following an eating plan and it’s been interesting and so I wanted to tell you about it but I am sure that I am sure that you are going to laugh, scream or a weird combination of both when I tell you what it’s called.

Let me also just take the liberty to explain that this way of eating isn’t new. In fact, it’s old and tired like the Logies. Nothing ground-breaking here, nothing I mention is going to make you go, ‘you ate what for a month you crazy mofo?’

In fact, the more I think about it, the less complicated food is. It really is quite simple but because of marketing, food companies and profit over people’s genuine health, we have the confusion crisis and people end up on stupid diets. Like the beetroot diet, the potato diet, the lemon detox diet, Ballerina tea or just drinking juice for a week. Yikes. If you have, like me, probably dabbled in the dieting world for many years you know that the story is the same. If you eat enough cabbage soup and less Snickers in a week, you will lose a bit of weight. But it’s not a long-term solution, it’s not healthy and it’s not fun for your partner (especially cabbage soup!).

Before I tell you the name, let me tell you about my food rule. I take it from Michael Pollen, who although now is experimenting with psychedelics, has a very clear concise and well-accepted view on food.

That’s it! It’s very simple filter on anything you are going to shovel into your cake hole. By food, I mean REAL food. Pop-tarts are not real food neither are pretzels. If it’s out of a packet, chances are it’s not real food. Soz. I know you love those Le Snacks but that ain’t real food.

So, this eating plan. Ok, it’s called the PEGAN DIET (vegan and paleo). Yep, there I said it. So, what is the PEGAN DIET and after you’ve calmed down why should you try it?

This first became a thing in 2014 after Mark Hyman, M.D., director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, referenced it in a blog post describing his own diet and in the same blog post, he pointed out that Lebron James had recently tried a paleo diet, and Rich Roll, a man who completed five Iron Man marathons in seven days, followed a vegan lifestyle—so he thought merging the two, while still considering one’s own personal needs, seemed like a good idea. I think he also did it to piss everyone off!

Is it any oxymoron? Aren’t paleo and vegan diets total opposites?

Well, essentially yes as far as content goes, but in principal they are similar, both hinging on the idea of skipping the processed food aisle and eating closer to nature. The idea of produce-forward eating is gaining a following.

So, what can you eat?

Well anything that is real food; You’ll have to skip dairy and some grains, make more plant-based meals, and avoid all of that pre-packaged yumminess you might turn to for convenience and cravings.

Why does it work?

Well dairy for most people just isn’t the greatest and I have always found myself feeling less lethargic when I cut it out. Also there is that whole argument about how the only thing that should drink a cows milk is a baby cow. You can read more about that here. And instead of saying ‘Hell NO!’ to ALL carbs I have found the ones the work; quinoa, buckwheat (which isn’t wheat I only recently discovered) and using almond meal instead of flours. It’s more about finding the right replacement rather than complete demonization of food groups.

What does my day look like?

Breakfast: 3 egg-omelette, cooked in grass fed butter with some sautéed kale (14 hours after my last meal, I will address this in my next article)

Black coffee with some MCT Oil

Lunch: Homemade wellness soup (it tastes amazing) (Batch make for the week on Sunday). Sprinkled with gomashio, olive oil and garnished with basil.

Dinner: Wild caught salmon with some steamed veggies and baked sweet potato if I’m ravenous.

Green tea if I need it during the day. Maybe some strawberries and coconut yoghurt with chia for a snack.

It’s simple.

Instead of overthinking everything, you just use the filter, is it real food? Yes, then eat it! Stash some nuts in your handbag or some seaweed snacks for a on the go energy hit and try to avoid convenience stores, they may be convenient but there isn’t anything nutritious in there for you. I promise. And no, that ‘healthy looking oat cookie’ is just grains and sugar babe, Soz!
